Kyle Rockett Challenges Alumni to Support PBL

Dear Fellow Business Alumni:

I hope that all of you are doing well in your respective careers. Most of all, I hope you are enjoying the career path you have chosen.  I chose to major within the Business Department because it offered me the broadest of career options.  While the entire college prides itself on a “Personal Journey into Higher Learning”, I feel the Business Department of Williams perfectly came through on this promise.

In my four years at Williams, some of the best memories I have were through the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) travels and competitions.  In addition to the classes on campus, learning off campus was extremely rewarding for me.  For this reason, each year I attempted to get more involved with PBL because it was an amazing way to travel, network, and compete in real life scenarios.

I am sure that all of us have some sort of memory of the Business Department and PBL. After graduation, I knew that it would be important to try and pay back to the program that furthered me in my life. Without a doubt, I knew it would be rewarding for me to contribute to PBL and help open the same opportunities to other future students.

Now that we have graduated, established careers and families, and hopefully a more flexible budget, it is now time to give back.  For some of you, it may be impossible to give anything.  If that is your present scenario, the Business Department, I am sure, more than understands and simply wants your presence at alumni events when possible.  For others, it is a matter of understanding the needs that the Department currently has. For instance, the computer and the projector the Department currently uses for competitions are six years old and in much need of replacing! There is also the factor of success that raises Williams’ financial obligations. With around 22 students competing in the state PBL competition and 13 at the national PBL this past year, the only saving grace was the event being held in Nashville, Tennessee which is not a long-distance destination.  Next year, the anticipation is even more students will travel to the national PBL competition, and it is scheduled for Orlando, Florida.  My wish is that every person that wants to go for the experience will be able to go.

Let’s try and make this easy on the Department and the current students. This fall, the WBC Business Department will once again put their homecoming t-shirts on sale to help raise funds for PBL. This is a perfect opportunity to give!  This year, let’s try and make a contribution based on the number of t-shirts sold.  By doing this type of donation, it will add extra incentive to the current students to sell as many shirts as possible. Last year, they sold approximately 250, and this year WBC has the largest freshman class ever and our reunion.  The opportunity to sell approximately 275 shirts exists.   Please consider contributing $.10, $.25, or $.50 for each shirt sold.  If the students sell 250 shirts and you pledge $.50 per shirt sold, that is only $125!  If you are hesitant of that type of commitment, please consider sending some sort of contribution.  These donations will go FAR in accomplishing the needs of the Department. The Business Department will let us know at the reunion how many shirts were sold.

I hope to see all of you October 30, 2010 for our Business Department reunion. I look forward to catching up with my old friends, and seeing new faces from years past!

Sincerely,

-Kyle Rockett  (Class of 2007)
